AICV® Extra Heavy Oil

Extra heavy oil or bitumen is a challenge to produce. Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) is commonly used to produce the oil, but steam breakthrough limits the production and economics.

Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) is commonly used to produce the oil, but steam breakthrough limits the production and economics when it cannot be controlled. The Heavy Oil AICV® can stop the steam, improve oil recovery and reduce the steam oil ratio (SOR) significantly.

The Heavy Oil AICV® has been extensively tested internally and externally at Independent Heavy Oil test facilities where the testing qualified its performance in shutting off gas/steam. The first successful installation of the Extra Heavy Oil AICV® was performed in Canada in 2015.

It has been clearly documented that Inflow Control devices improve SAGD processes.  The AICV® has been tested and applied within SAGD conditions and shows the immense benefits of being able to shut-off unwanted steam breakthrough while also allowing increased oil production.

The AICV® increases the production and recovery, reduce the SOR and/or water cut (WC). InflowControl has performed a design and qualification program for an AICV® that can shut-off steam and water in SAGD application for a major Canadian oil company. The first field test was successfully performed in 2015.
