85% Gas Shut-Off in a Mature Carbonate
The retrofit AICV® completion was installed for a Major Middle East E&P operator where the AICV® completion brought the oil production immediately back to commercial rates and removed the high GOR issue.
Shut off the gas zones and return the oil well to commercial production rates within this carbonate formation. This major operator which had one of the largest fields in the world, had areas of the field shut-in due to an excessively high Gas Oil Ratio (GOR) in a fractured carbonate reservoir with ultra-light oil.
After the major operator considered several options such as conventional ICD's (inflow control devices) and also ICD's with a sliding sleeve, the operator wanted to verify InflowControl’s AICV® performance. InflowControl was tasked with the challenge of proving it's AICV® could stop gas production and bring the oil production back to commercial rates.
The retrofit AICV® completion that was installed across the horizontal well with nearly two dozen compartments and brought the oil production immediately back to commercial rates and removed the high GOR issue. The post completion production test showed that the GOR was close to the solution GOR which equated to a reduction of >85%, better than initially predicted in the modelling.
The GOR was reduced from over 10,000 to less than 1000 scf/stb. A PLT was performed pre-completion and post AICV installation and confirmed uniform production after AICV® installation. Prior to installation more than half of the well was not producing any oil, meaning the AICV® unlocked stranded production and providing better drainage. The gas shut-off made it possible to have a high drawdown, resulting in improved production from the matrix and increased oil recovery.
